PhilaU’s Kanbar College of Design, Engineering, and Commerce offers an innovative and transdisciplinary approach to teaching and learning that provides students with the skills and knowledge to think creatively, brainstorm new ideas and work collaboratively to come up with innovative solutions to complex problems.
Through the integrated DEC core curriculum, students will dive into their major while forging new collaborations between designers, engineers, and entrepreneurs. By learning in a transdisciplinary environment, students go on to be better, more effective leaders in their professions.
Students gain the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in the 21st century workplace through real-world experience working on industry-sponsored projects. This pioneering curriculum prepares students to excel at jobs that exist today (as well as ones that will emerge tomorrow), adapt to changes in their professions, and collaborate with colleagues in other fields.

Accounting – This program can lead to careers in public, private, or government accounting, as well as banking, finance, and other management specialties. A sequence of business and general education courses prepares accounting graduates for all facets of the business world. Electives in specialties within the profession, such as tax accounting, are offered. Beyond the traditional four-year BS program, students have an opportunity to pursue a five-year BS/MBA degree program with specialized options such as accounting and taxation. Many students obtain C.P.A. (Certified Public Accountant) accreditation after graduation.
Finance – Students in the program study financial markets, financial institutions, investments and portfolio management, and financial management. Quantitative, analytical and computer skills are developed, as well as decision-making with a global perspective as they are all critical for managerial decision-making. A degree in finance prepares students for career opportunities in a broad array of industries such as commercial banking, investment banking, securities brokerage, insurance, corporate finance, credit management, risk management, real estate, financial analysis, and personal financial planning.
International Business – This program enables students to combine an international business concentration with a traditional functional area such as accounting, finance, management or marketing. The International Business concentration is unique because it consists of seven highly integrated components, providing our graduates with the skills and the training expected in industry: College Studies, Foreign Language, Cultural Area studies, Business Core courses, International Business, Functional Business competence, and study or work abroad.
Management: Leadership and Innovation in Organizations – This unique program focuses on how managers and leaders can create conditions for innovation and growth at the individual, team, and organizational levels. Students evaluate how to balance the challenges of organizing, managing, and leading innovation with the need to produce measurable outcomes within the organization. To broaden their expertise, management students must also specialize in another business related area through an additional concentration or minor in accounting, finance, fashion industry management, marketing, international business, or psychology.
Marketing: Consumer Insight and Innovation – Building on the DEC coursework, students utilize a range of creative, analytical, and technical processes to generate ideas and transform those ideas into marketing strategies. Exploring and applying quantitative and qualitative techniques for identifying consumers’ needs, they gain experience turning marketing concepts into reality. Students develop skills to analyze demand and market segments, manage budgets, design marketing and advertising campaigns, and formulate a comprehensive marketing plan.
Fashion Merchandising and Management – The FM & M curriculum combines the fundamentals of business, including accounting, economics, marketing, finance, and management, with textile and apparel courses taught by industry savvy professionals. Students learn the process of apparel design and manufacture from fiber to final apparel product. Students are also involved in the process of selection, procurement and distribution of products in a retail setting. Furthermore they learn the significance of product execution through presentation.

Fashion Merchandising – Fashion merchandisers are responsible for understanding the needs and demands of the consumer. Consumers’ needs are influenced by lifestyle choices and changes in the environment. The merchandiser is responsible for selecting and procuring merchandise from all over the world, ensuring that the store has a proper assortment of goods. Positions in merchandising include buyers, department managers, merchandising managers, fashion coordinators, product developers, and merchandise planners.
Fashion Industry Management – This program exposes students to the entire fashion value chain from the background of fiber composition to the final branded product, focusing on the efficient and effective delivery of quality merchandise to consumers. Students are immersed in the techniques and business practices needed to implement competitive production systems for today’s global marketplace. Students learn to make tactical supply chain decisions, develop global sourcing strategies, and utilize cutting-edge industry software, all in the context of a global marketplace.
