Each of the three sections of the Advanced Typography course took field trips and participated in a full-day Creative Letterpress workshop at Lead Graffitti studios in Newark, Delaware. The workshops were led by Ray Nichols and his wife, Jill, and son, Trey.

The Art and Design World: A Lecture by Lanny Sommese

Distinguished and well-decorated designer, Lanny Sommese, regaled the crowd with his stories and prolific work spanning a four decades plus career. Born in East Moline, Illinois in 1943, Lanny Sommese grew up in Gainesville, Florida. He attended the University of Florida where he studied graphic design, art and played basketball. After graduating with a Bachelor of Design Degree and a B.F.A. in painting in 1966, Sommese accepted a research fellowship at the University of Illinois in Urbana, where he received an M.F.A. in Graphic Design in 1970. Since then he has been a member of the Pennsylvania State Universityfaculty and is currently a Distinguished Professor, Head of Graphic Design and a fellow of Penn State’s Institute for Arts and Humanities.
