Alumni Profile: Lindsey Blake Gorfman, Otto, NYC

At the most recent Real World 2014 event it was particularly great to catch up with Lindsey Blake Gorfman (PhilaU GDC, 2011). Lindsey is currently working as a designer at the design firm, OTTO, in New York City where she has been employed since graduating in 2011. According to Lindsey: “It was really nice to see you and catch up with the other familiar faces! Was a nice excuse for me to get away from the chaotic NYC life for a day and finally visit the school as well, as it has been way too long. Brought back a lot of nice memories, and was great to finally see the much anticipated DEC building that we all wish we had gotten to be a part of!”

Real World 2014 PhilaU Graphic Design Alumni Event

The Graphic Design Communication program proudly welcomed back a stellar lineup of alums at the annual Real World 2014 Graphic Design Alumni event. The seats were packed in the DEC Center Forum with current students (regardless that their attendance was required!)—plus some prospective students and parents attending the Graphic Design Discovery Day events—to hear the “pearls of wisdom” offered by those that have made their way in the real world (yes, there is life after college!). In a panel discussion format, recent graduates of the program shared their career advice and experiences and useful job-searching information with the audience. Thanks everyone for coming back to see us, and for giving us your valuable time—continue to stay in touch!

AIGA Centennial Panel Discussion Features Bob Warkulwiz

The year 2014 marks the 100th Anniversary of AIGA, the professional association for design. A yearlong series of celebrations and events are being planned, and as part of this, the AIGA Philadelphia chapter recently celebrated the AIGA Centennial with a panel discussion featuring some founding fathers and mothers of the chapter. In 1981, the first local chapter of AIGA (the American Institute of Graphic Arts) was formed in Philadelphia, but few know the intriguing stories behind it. What set of circumstances led a small number of designers to come together to form their own chapter? What was it like to work as a designer in the city in the 1970s and early 1980s? What prevailing factors in the environment drove a need for excellence in design?
