Alum Ronnie Alley at Adobe San Fran

Adobe was looking for ways to increase their online presence and drive user engagement for their online portfolio website, Behance. The solution they came up with was a weekly design stream that would be shot live, where anyone watching from around the world could tune in and interact with the featured designers. Each week would focus on a different field in design; be it graphic design, illustration, typography, UI/UX, etc. The designer’s that Adobe chose to feature on these live streams would come from a wide array of backgrounds and levels of experience. Alum Ronnie Alley (2016) was recently fortunate enough to be approached by Adobe to be one of their featured designers during a week focusing on graphic design.

The Graphic Design Communication program proudly welcomed back a stellar lineup of alums at the annual Real World 2018 Jefferson Graphic Design Alumni event. The seats were packed in the DEC Center Forum with prospective students and parents attending the Graphic Design Discovery Day, as well as current students (regardless that their attendance was required!) to hear the “pearls of wisdom” offered by those that have made their way in the real world (yes, there is life after college!).

Employer Panel Discussion Features PhilaU Graphic Design Alums

A recent panel discussion sponsored by Career Services held at PhilaU featured three PhilaU Graphic Design alums from the Archer Group of Wilmington, DE. Michael Mayton, Creative Director (PhilaU GDC, 2008), Giovanni Frias (PhilaU GDC, 2014), and Bruno Forcine (PhilaU GDC, 2015) participated in the panel discussion entitled “What Employers are Looking for in Portfolio.” The alums spoke to students about what employers look for in a successful portfolio and provided helpful tips to help students land their dream job.

Visual Explanations for the Science Classroom

The final set of posters designed for the 8th grade physics classroom

Last year Reesha Grosso (GDC Alum) was preparing her 8th grader science classroom at Garnet Valley Middle school and noticed a lack of well designed engaging posters available for her walls.

“Each year students come to me having been exposed to a decade of sharply designed media, and I want my classroom to feel relevant to this new generation.” says Grosso.

After graduating from PhilaU about a decade ago, Grosso has since obtained a Master’s in science education from UPenn positioning her with a unique perspective of the STEAM (science, tech, engineering, art, math) education model with the ability to bridge science and art.

Grosso brought the problem to her old GDC program and it seemed to be the perfect partnership for the newly revived GD elective Issues in Information Design. Finding better ways to communicate and engage science concepts to young audiences is exactly the type of current topic that can be addressed through good information design.

Professor Walker and Grosso collaborated to come up with a format for the project that would actively involve both the Garnet Valley students and the PhilaU students. Focusing on the Physic topics Grosso covered with her students, groups of Garnet Valley students worked together
