Saturday’s Open House Brings Prospective Students and Families to Campus

Hundreds of prospective students and their families from areas throughout the Northeast and other regions of the United States turned out for Philadelphia University’s Undergraduate Admissions’ Fall Open House Oct. 20.

Under sunny skies with unseasonably warm breezes, the crowd of nearly 1,000 visitors toured campus, making stops at an informational fair in The Gallagher Center—where they 20071020_phlu_c_30_2.jpgwere greeted by President Stephen Spinelli Jr., Ph.D.—showcasing University offices and programs, a financial aid session and enjoyed lunch at Ravenhill Dining Hall.

“Open House is a good opportunity to inform both parents and prospective students about the University’s different offerings,” said Matt Baker, dean, School of Science and Health, a 15-year participant of the recruitment event who has presented to the visitors as a faculty member, program director and dean.  “It’s a great way to help talented young people make an informed decision about their education.”

For Fashion Merchandising student Vicki Iulo ’10, being informed was at the top of her college-selection list when she was searching. “Attending Philadelphia University’s Fall Open House in 2005 not only helped me choose my college, but also my major,” she said.  Originally in pursuit of an Interior Design degree, Iulo couldn’t be happier to now be studying one of the University’s most popular majors, Fashion Merchandising.  “It was great to learn more about the University’s different programs directly from the professors who teach them and the students who attend,” she said.

A way to interest potential students in the University’s quality programs, beautiful campus, accessible location, 14:1 student/teacher ratio and other benefits, open houses only begin to highlight all that the University has to offer.  “We like to think of Open House as a way to sample the many opportunities available to students at Philadelphia University,” said Christine Greb, dean, Admissions.  “We hope that it whets their appetite, so they’ll return to campus again to attend a class or meet individually with faculty or staff.”  Philadelphia University’s next Open House is scheduled for Nov. 17, with another in the spring.
