University’s Convocation Ushers In 125th Academic Year

In his first Convocation at Philadelphia University, President Stephen Spinelli Jr., Ph.D., welcomed nearly 740 freshmen at the University’s 24th annual Convocation on Aug. 21.

Inside the Gallagher Athletic, Recreation and Convocation Center, Joanna Berwind – trustee and director of the Berwind Group and a new member of the Philadelphia University Board of Trustees – presented the Lawrence Katz Memorial Lecture to the near-capacity crowd of students and their families. Berwind gave the students her top three “beamed-in” messages: be authentic, take risks and learn to appreciate the power of the word “and.”  You can listen to Ms. Berwind’s speech by clicking here (right click and choose your browser’s save option to download the audio mp3 file).

Another highlight of the ceremony was the presentation of the Centennial Medal Award to Berwind and four high school teachers: Daniel Cipolla, science, La Salle College High School, Wyndmoor, PA., nominated by first-year student, Philip Iannuzzi; Donna Cratin, art, St. Hubert High School, Philadelphia, PA., nominated by first-year student, Allison Matthews; John Heusser, art, Moorestown High School, Moorestown, NJ., nominated by first-year student, Allison Alexandroff; and Dolores Yurchak, English, Bayonne High School, Bayonne, NJ., nominated by first-year student Gabrielle Nadolny.
