Six Philadelphia University student-athletes have earned Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) awards for the week ending on Sept. 21, 2008.
Women’s tennis swept the CACC Player and Rookie of the Week honors this week, as Daniela Rodriguez, (Quito, Ecuador) fell just short of the singles semifinal round of the ITA East Regional over the weekend while also playing for the doubles championship with teammate Adriana Rodriguez. The sophomore swept her singles matches earlier in the week against La Salle and Millersville. Lady Ram freshman Christina Brzozowski (Wallingford, CT) was named CACC Rookie of the Week after getting a singles victory at La Salle and a doubles win in a match against Millersville.
Men’s cross country junior Shawn D’Andrea (Blackwood, NJ) was named CACC Player of the Week after being the first CACC finisher at the Philadelphia Metro Championship by placing third in 26:21.95. He led the Rams to a first place team finish. For the women, freshman Sarah Simonetti (Perkasie, PA) was the individual champion at the Philadelphia Metro Championship, crossing the finish line in 19:44.31. She finished 25 seconds ahead of her nearest competitor, leading the Lady Rams to the women’s title.
CACC Honorable Mention nods were also given to volleyball junior Celena Rendon (San Antonio, TX) and men’s soccer junior Svetozar Gladic (Novi Sad, Serbia). Gladic’s six goals this season places him in a tie for first place in the CACC.
“It is an honor to receive CACC awards for six of our athletes this fall,” said Tom Shirley, director of Athletics and head coach of the Women’s Basketball Team. “Our athletes have been working hard this season and it is paying off. Philadelphia University has earned a reputation for strong student-athletes and these awards show dedication our students have.”
