Herb Magee, Philadelphia University Men’s Basketball Coach, Ties Adolph Rupp’s NCAA Record

Herb Magee, Philadelphia University’s legendary men’s basketball coach, last night won his 876th game and tied former University of Kentucky coach Adolph Rupp’s NCAA record.

With just three more wins, Magee will tie Dean Smith, who posted a total of 879 career wins just below Bobby Knight’s top record of 902 careers wins.

Magee’s latest milestone came in a 70-62 win at Holy Family University last night.  The PhilaU Rams will play at Caldwell College on Friday and move on to the CACC quarterfinal game at home March 3 against Chestnut Hill College.

Magee in February 2007 became the winningest DII coach in NCAA history — picking up his 829th career victory in a heart-stopping, overtime win against Wilmington College on the PhilaU court that is now named for Magee.  Today, Magee still holds the record for the most DII wins coached all in the NCAA.

A Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame nominee, Magee is in his 42nd season as coach of the Rams and 50th year total at Philadelphia University as both a player and a coach.  He was inducted as part of the fifth class into the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame this fall.
