Ryann Richardson, Fashion Industry Management Major, Wins Miss Philadelphia Competition

Ryann Richardson, a sophomore majoring in Fashion Industry Management, won the Miss Philadelphia competition March 28, winning a $10,000 scholarship and the opportunity to compete for the Miss Pennsylvania crown on June 27.

When her name was announced as the winner, it took Richardson a few seconds to realize she had won.  Almost immediately, the tears started to flow, but Richardson quickly realized she’d better stop crying or her makeup would be running as photos were being taken.

Then, a whirlwind day-and-a-half photo and media tour followed, during which Richardson made appearances on the local news circuit.

Richardson said she expects to juggle being a full-time student with her responsibilities as Miss Philadelphia for the next year.  She will be making public appearances and promoting a platform of HIV/AIDS prevention for young people.

Her goal is to raise $100,000 to support that cause through speaking engagements and community outreach during her year wearing the tiara.  “It will be a juggling act, but I’ll make it work,” Richardson, a Maryland native, said.  “It will be well worth it in the end.”

For the talent portion of the competition Saturday night, Richardson sang “One Night Only” from Dreamgirls.  On campus, however, she said she only sings in the shower and in the aerobics room – when no one else is around.  After graduation, Richardson said she would like to work in public relations, either in the fashion industry or for a firm.

The winner of the Miss Pennsylvania pageant goes on to compete in the national Miss America contest.
