The Fashion Merchandising Program will sponsor an HBO documentary, Schmatta: Rags to Riches to Rags, film viewing and panel discussion Thursday, Feb. 4 at 6:30 p.m. in The Kanbar Campus Center Performance Space.
The documentary portrays a history of Manhattan’s garment district, which some now believe is in danger of disappearing. The story follows the once vibrant apparel manufacturing industry in the United States and narrates the relationship with unions and government.
The chronicle reminds us of the early days of the U.S. apparel industry and inquires into its troubling decline. In 1965, 95 percent of American clothing was made in the U.S., by 2009 only five percent was manufactured here.
Following the film, there will be a panel discussion including Amy Hall of Eileen Fisher, Desta Raines, compliance manager for the Jones Apparel Group, Erica Wolf of Nanette Lapore, and Joe Raicko, a cast member in the film and president of the Cutter’s Union, to name a few.
