PhilaU Textile Design Graduate Student Wins ‘Nspire’ Design Competition

Elizabeth Weissert, a textile design graduate student at Philadelphia University, has been awarded the grand prize in the Northwest Carpets and Aureus Design Systems’ 2010 Nspire Design competition.

Weissert was awarded a $1,000 cash prize and a trip to Las Vegas to attend the Hospitality Design Expo 2010. Her winning design will be made by Aureus carpet and will be displayed at the show for the hospitality world to see.

“I don’t think I’ve quite processed that my design was chosen as the grand prize. Part of me keeps thinking, ‘Are they sure?’, and then there is another part that is saying, ‘Vegas!’” Weissert laughed.

“But on a more serious note, I am very thankful to Northwest Carpets for hosting a competition that gives up-and-coming designers a great opportunity to gain insight into this aspect of the textile industry,” she continued. “The process of designing for this competition makes you constantly aware of what you’re walking on; I look forward to learning more about this market at the Hospitality Design Expo in May.”

For the Nspire Design competition, students were asked to design a public space carpet for an upscale hotel. They had to coordinate large scale field, medium scale field and small scale outfill in their designs. The entries were judged on originality, presentation, and feasibility.

Undergraduate and graduate students of textile design at Philadelphia University, Moore College of Art and Design, and Drexel University participated in the competition.
