‘HealthyU at PhilaU’ November Lunch and Learn Series

Each month, the Lunch and Learn Series will contain exciting, educational discussions addressing various health-related topics based on national health observances. All wellness workshops are open to the University community and will take place in The Gallagher Center PE Classroom.

Whether you would like to participate for PE credit (counts as one wellness class for registered PE Rec. and Wellness students) or for your own personal health and wellness interest, please join faculty, staff and students for outstanding presentations, and some healthy snacks, too!

If you wish to participate, please email Rhonda Davis, director of Fitness and Wellness at davisr@PhilaU.edu with your name and which of the following sessions you plan to attend.

Sexual Health – HPV and Cervical Cancer
Thursday, Nov. 4 from Noon to 12:45 p.m.
What does an abnormal Papanicolaou test (also called a Pap smear) mean for women across the lifespan? Have you or any of your friends been told that your pap smear was abnormal? In a time where human papillomavirus (HPV) prevalence is high, it is quite common to encounter an atypical pap smear. During this presentation, participants will learn what HPV is and how it is linked to cervical cancer, as well as ways to help prevent the disease and its repercussions. Kirstin Patragnoni-Sauter, MSN, CRNP, of the Student Health Center, will lead this presentation.

Nutrient Holiday Know How’s
Wednesday, Nov. 10 from Noon to 12:45 p.m.
The holiday season is a time filled with parties, family gatherings and lots of food, but with a little help, you can keep from eating too much during the holidays. Janet K. Little, MPH, RD, LDN, clinical dietitian at Cura Hospitality, and Rhonda Davis, director of Fitness and Wellness, will share tips on how to eat healthy and nutritiously during the holidays in order to have more energy to enjoy the season.

World Kindness Day
Monday, Nov. 15 from Noon to 5 p.m.
Share a story. Say something nice about someone special during our promotion in The Gallagher Center Lobby. Please stop by and write something special on the tablecloths and receive a thank you gift. Rhonda Davis, director of Fitness and Wellness, will drape the tablecloth collection of stories in the Fitness Center for the remaining days in November.

Lung Cancer Awareness
Tuesday, Nov.16 from Noon to 12:45 p.m.
Lung cancer is the leading cancer killer of women and men in the United State. If doctors are going to catch cancer early, treat it and give people the best chance for survival, it is important to know about lung cancer and its symptoms, take measures to reduce our risks and understand your health history. Awareness is key! While smoking cigarettes is the leading cause of lung cancer, it also strikes nonsmokers. Please join the discussion, learn and raise awareness about lung cancer, and then walk during the Great American Smoke Out on Nov. 18.

Great American Smoke Out
Thursday, Nov. 18 from Noon to 12:45 p.m.
Please join the two-mile walk that begins at Noon. The group will assemble at The Gallagher Center and walk with gusto!
