Fashion faculty Elizabeth Ives talks about velvet to Philadelphia Inquirer

Elizabeth Ives, adjunct fashion design faculty member, said velvet was carried along medieval trade routes from the Far East to become the fabric choice of European royalty and the Vatican in a Philadelphia Inquirer Dec. 7 story that details the popularity this season of the lush material. When it became less expensive to make in the 1950s, Ives said, velvet became a mainstay for dressing up during the Christmas holiday.
