Alumni and Health Professionals Share Career Advice at Fourth Annual D. Walter Cohen Asclepius Career Day

On April 30, the Fourth Annual D. Walter Cohen Asclepius Career Day was held for Pre-Medical Studies majors in the Kanbar Performance Space. D. Walter Cohen DDS, a member of the Board of Trustees and the event sponsor, opened the program with a short presentation entitled “The Future of Medicine.”

The event featured speakers from admissions offices, and also alumni and local physicians and health professionals. The 42 students heard speeches from those representing medical specialties including dermatology, cardiology and public health, as well as pharmacy and optometry. Fifteen alumni and nine healthcare professionals were also available to answer questions about admission into graduate schools and career paths during the four afternoon breakout sessions.

Notable guests included the event sponsor, D. Walter Cohen DDS, Chancellor Emeritus of Drexel University College of Medicine; Marla Gold M.D., Dean of the School of Public Health, Drexel University; Stefanie Emanuel D.Pharm., Senior Scientist, Cardiokine Inc. (Class of 2001); Captain Lindsay Stevenson, Ph.D., D(ABMM), Assistant Chief, Infectious Disease Laboratory Department of Pathology, Walter Reed Army Medical Center; and local physicians Michael DeAngelis, MD (Cardiology Consultants); Harold Milstein, MD (Family Dermatology); and John Kelly, MD, Director of Orthopedic Education, University of Pennsylvania.

Also in attendance were representatives from five admissions offices that included Drexel University School of Public Health, Kornberg School of Dentistry, Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, St. George’s University and Salus University, as well as representatives from Kaplan MCAT Preparatory Testing and recruiters from the U.S. Army. Students were also able to obtain literature about doctoral programs at Thomas Jefferson University and Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine.
