Students, faculty, staff and alumni can mark their calendars for the fourth annual Day of Service, which will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 27.
The campus-wide event will run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will occur in place of classes. All traditional undergraduate classes will be suspended through 5 p.m. Evening classes beginning after 5 p.m. will meet as scheduled.
During the first three years, and thanks to over 3,460 volunteers, PhilaU students, faculty, staff and alumni have completed an incredible 12,150 of combined volunteer service hours.
This year, the selection of service projects covers a variety of interests and issues: youth education and mentorship; hunger and homelessness; community development and restoration; animals and the environment; health and special needs; and senior citizen concerns.
Project registration will begin soon so interested volunteers are asked to gather their friends and colleagues and plan to help make the Day of Service 2011 the largest to date.
Visit www.PhilaU.edu/DayofService for updated information and project registration. Volunteer registration will begin online the week of Sept. 5.
There are a number of ways students will be able to participate in Day of Service activities:
- A class or academic program
- A club/organization
- An athletic team
- An individual volunteer
Students should check their syllabi to see if one of their professors is assigning a Day of Service project for his or her class. Additionally, if students are involved in a club/organization and/or an athletic team, check to see if that group is signing up for a project. Anyone who is not committed through a group or class can sign up as an individual volunteer once registration begins. Continue to check the website for information.
Faculty and staff:
For faculty and staff interested in volunteering for service activities, registration will soon be available online. Faculty members with an idea for developing a service project should complete the Project Proposal Form by Thursday, Sept. 8.
PhilaU alumni in Philadelphia, other cities and around the world are also encouraged to participate in service activities. Alumni are more than welcome to participate in organized activities on campus on Tuesday, Sept. 27 or they can plan service projects in other areas or cities.
