PhilaU to Host Sustainability Forum Beginning Wednesday, March 28

PhilaU will host a sustainability forum designed to educate, inspire and promote the diverse role sustainability plays in our lives on Wednesday, March 28 and Thursday, March 29.

The forum will feature presentations by Mark DeKay, chair of the graduate program in architecture at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, who will speak about integral sustainable design, and Michael Kempa, director of sustainability solutions, global energy strategy and market, at Honeywell International.

DeKay will speak at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in The Tuttleman Center Auditorium and Kempa will speak at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the Kanbar Campus Center Performance Space.

On March 28, Philadelphia University President Stephen Spinelli Jr., Ph.D., will talk about sustainability efforts on campus and discuss PhilaU’s recent pledge to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions by signing the American College & University Presidents’ Climate Commitment.   The keynote talk will be at 5 p.m. in the Kanbar Campus Center Performance Space.

The sustainability forum was organized by PhilaU students in the groups Student Organization for Sustainable Action and the campus chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council.

“The goal of the forum is to involve and engage the university community in a dialogue of how components of the quadruple bottom line—environment, equity, economy and experience—are relevant to their majors, careers and lives and to further promote and expand the culture of sustainability at Philadelphia University,” said Caroline Park, a graduate student in sustainable design and co-organizer of the event.

In addition to the talks, student showcases and sustainability activities, including vendors, food and live music, will be held on the Kanbar Campus Center patio from noon to 2 p.m. both days.
