The distinctive aluminum veil surrounding PhilaU’s DEC Center was recognized as a top sustainability practice in the 2014 Insider Knowledge report published by Environmental Leader and Energy Manager Today.
The veil is “an iconic form that contributes significantly to a reduction in solar heat gain, while maximizing views for occupants,” the report said. The perforated metal screen shields the building from the glare and heat gain of direct sunlight while allowing air movement between the building and veil to cool the building. Close integration of thermal, structural and aesthetic performance criteria was required for the project.
The DEC Center’s innovative and distinctive design also was featured in a June 2 story in Metal Architecture magazine.
