For Herb Magee, Road to 1,000 Wins Never Left Philadelphia: USA Today

USA Today published a long feature Jan 28 on the career of PhilaU men’s basketball Coach Herb Magee, who is closing in on his 1,000th career win. “He’d like No. 1,000 to come and go,so there’s no extra pressure on his players. He says it’s the basketball itself, the relationships with players and the school he loves that keep him going–with no plans of retirement,” the story said.

Magee, who was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame in 2011, is in his 48th season at PhilaU, where he was a star on the court during his student days. He is three wins away from his 1,000th career victory.

The story also quoted Athletic Director Tom Shirley, former PhilaU basketball player and current  Penn State basketball coach Pat Chambers, and local coaches Jay Wright from Villanova, Fran Dunphy from Temple, and Jim Lynum, former NBA coach and long-time friend who played with Magee at West Catholic.
